University of Vermont
The Birthday PartyThe University of Vermont is the academic workplace of Professor Evan Harris and the campus setting for a crucial stage of Chase Cooper’s investigation into the murder of five-year-old Charlotte Hamilton. It links a revelation about Harris’s professional standing to Chase’s search for him, while the detective’s hesitation to act on suspicion alone keeps the university visit distinct from proof of guilt.
Institutional Connection
Kathy Hamilton reveals the university connection inadvertently while speaking with Fay Hamilton and Megan Carter. Asked about the therapist who had become her daughter’s biological father, Kathy says she does not want the matter discussed, then lets slip that he has recently received tenure at the university. Fay’s surprise that he is now a professor makes the institution part of the family’s disclosure: Harris’s academic advancement contrasts with the painful history Kathy is trying to keep private.
The professional timeline Chase later uncovers is more specific. A background check shows that Harris had worked as a psychotherapist for four years by 1997, when he was thirty-one, and that the sexual-assault allegation from that year concerned a fifteen-year-old boy. Harris was then employed at a different clinic from the one where Kathy had seen him. The allegation therefore predates the university visit and is not presented as an incident at the university.
The Campus Investigation
After checking Harris’s record at the station, Chase drives to the University of Vermont campus. The earlier allegation gives him reason to consider Harris as a suspect, but Chase also recognizes the limits of what it establishes: the charges were dropped after the boy retracted his allegations, and Chase knows that this outcome alone does not establish whether the accusation was true. He considers the possibility that he is rushing to identify Charlie’s killer, then reflects on how difficult it can be for victims of sexual assault to testify and how the justice system may fail to support them.
At the campus security gate, Chase shows his badge. Although he considers asking the guard to prevent Professor Harris from leaving, he decides that doing so would exceed his authority because he has only a hunch, not confirming evidence. He proceeds into the grounds, parks, hurries into a building, climbs two flights of stairs, and follows a corridor to an assistant’s office. There he sees a young woman packing heavy books and notices that the door to Harris’s office is closed.
Role in the Investigation
The campus visit gives Chase a physical destination for the search, but it does not resolve his uncertainty about Harris. His caution at the gate matters: the detective is under pressure to find Charlie’s killer, yet he distinguishes a troubling history and a plausible suspicion from grounds to restrict someone’s movement. The university thus serves as both Harris’s place of professional status and the setting in which Chase must decide how far the available evidence permits him to go.
Later, Chase calls for police units in the vicinity of the University of Vermont and surrounding areas to locate Harris’s black Cadillac CT5. He identifies Harris as wanted in connection with Charlotte Hamilton’s murder and says he believes Harris has fled and may be heading for an airport. The campus and its surrounding area become part of the search perimeter as the investigation shifts from checking Harris’s background to locating him.
